SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACTS
Social:
All around Europe, people were negatively impacted by the Black Death in a social way. People who caught the disease, abandoned their family and friends, travelled far and wide to escape from the environment they were living in and also stopped believing in Religion. They stopped believing in it because they thought that many priests and clergy’s died through the disease. They also though that when they prayed to God to help prevent them from catching the disease, he rejected their prayers and didn’t help them. Although most of the society wanted to survive the disease, most people also wanted to obey the saying: ‘Eat, Drink and be merry for tomorrow you may die.’ Any type of work and receiving funeral rights were also stopped. Also, some people felt that the fury of God was decreasing upon the people and so they battled The Black Death with a prayer. All of these effects have been recorded in the introduction of the Decameron.
Economic:
Along with the social impacts the Black Death has had on Europe, there were more than enough people that were affected by the Black Death economically. The society or country underwent a sudden and an extreme increase in wages. Due to the illnesses and deaths that were caused by the Black Death, company’s became extremely insufficient in producing their products. Since it was really hard and challenging to obtain products through trades, the products were produced locally and all the products that were imported in other countries increased in money. The request for people to fill in for the people who were sick with the Plague became really difficult because there was such a large amount of people who couldn’t work due to the Black Death. In summary, wages out took the prices and the standard of living was raised. Both effects- the Social and Economic had a drastic and negative impact on the European society.
